Nurses Attack Fair Wages Commission Over SSSS

Members of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) in the Northern Region have attacked the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) for allegedly shrouding the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) in “secrecy,” as the Commission had failed to explain to them their salary placement levels.

The aggrieved nurses, who have threatened to take an unpleasant action (probably a sit down strike) against the government by June 30, 2011, said they were at a complete loss as to how the migration onto the SSSS process would be.

Addressing a press conference in Tamale, the Northern Regional Chairman of the GRNA, Mr. Musah Salifu, said their demand for a vivid explanation was necessitated by the fact that none of their members, including local, regional and national executives, seems to have a clear idea as to what was contained in the SSSS package for nurses and midwives.

The National Executive Council of the Association, earlier last month, called on the FWSC to sit down with them and explain the migration of nurses and midwives onto the SSSS by the end of July to them, but their request was not honoured.

Against this background, the Tamale Teaching Hospital branch of the GRNA is requesting for a very clear and comprehensive explanation regarding the placement levels of their members, and the accompanying salaries that can be realistically expected after the migration process, so as to avoid disappointments and its attendant consequences.

Mr. Salifu said information on the package seems to be shrouded in some kind of secrecy, and was being treated like national security information, adding that the association deemed it a right to know exactly what was contained in the package being prepared for them, as nurses or workers of Ghana before June 30.

The Tamale Teaching Hospital branch of the GRNA has stated in no uncertain terms that the FWSC must come out and furnish them with the necessary information, not later than the June 30, 2011 deadline, otherwise, they should not blame them for any unpleasant consequences that might arise in the future, as a result of their silence and secrecy over the SSSS, which they thought was completely uncalled for.

Meanwhile, the government would, by July this year, ensure that all public workers are migrated onto the SSSS, to prevent the widening disparities in the salaries of Ghanaian workers, but the process appears to many potential beneficiaries as very obscure.
